7 Great Sports Handicapping Videos on YouTube

Sports Handicapping Videos

So, there I was just watching various videos on YouTube – various appetizer recipes to try out someday, MMA news, what to watch on Netflix, reportedly haunted places in my area, things like that.  One video on the topic of Betting Strategy That Works by Caan Berry Pro Trader was on my recommended feed.  I watched it, enjoyed it and got to thinking – how many sports handicapping videos out there truly offer nuggets of ideas and advice?  I am talking about the how-to type of videos.  Not videos put together only to promote a product or service to buy.

Maybe one day, I will overcome my shyness and put my fat mug on a screen.  Maybe talk about what has worked for me and what has not.  I would say creating sports handicapping videos with my mug smiling and gleefully throwing my opinions and angles out there is relatively unlikely, but who really knows.  I would probably be sweating and mumbling incoherently if I did.

Anyway, here is a list of seven videos that I found.  Obviously, there are a lot more out there.  These, however, caught my eye.  In my opinion, they do not promote anything in the video that overtakes the meat of the topic.  I enjoyed watching them, nobody forced anyone to purchase anything, and they were educational.

So, without further ado.  Here is my quick list of 7 great sports handicapping videos I found on YouTube.

Video 1: Betting Strategy That Works – Make an Income Betting on Sports – By: Caan Berry Pro Trader

This is the video that stirred the idea for me to write this article (mentioned above).  It explores the idea of “the law of probability”, which Mr. Berry believes is at the core of every successful betting strategy.  Probability is the likelihood of an event occurring.  In the case of the example discussed in the video here, probability is the likelihood of a particular horse to win a particular race.

Mr. Berry describes what he believes a successful betting strategy consists of and throws a little bit about “how-tos” in order to have the strategy work for you.

Video 2: Sports Betting 101: Top Beginners Mistakes in Betting the NFL – By: WagerTalk TV

In this video, host Kelly Stewart and sports betting specialist Teddy Covers discuss various betting tips when wagering on the NFL.  Both speak about some common mistakes made by inexperienced and undisciplined NFL bettors.  They bring up some excellent points to consider when wagering on the NFL including some common mistakes made by beginner bettors.  Such mistakes can be:

  • Placing bets with only one book, because line variance does matter.
  • Betting a significant number of parlays.
  • Poor money management. Stick with your plan.  I wrote various articles on money management strategies including Money Management in Sports Handicapping and Bankroll Management: The Kelly Criterion in Sports Betting.  Having a solid money management plan and sticking with that plan is ideal.  Do not alter from it.
  • Do not chase bets due to a streak of poor past performances. Be disciplined.
  • Every week is a different week for an NFL team. Ignore recency bias.

Video 3: How to win in sports betting with proper money management – By: Rick Steel

I personally enjoyed the direct, business-like element to his presentation.  The video discusses money management unit betting and the importance of the topic.  He preaches a flat betting approach to bankroll management.

His website is ProfessionalSportsHandicapping.com.  One thing I noticed about his website is something I too believe is extremely necessary to have on a website that offers handicapping picks – an archive of past selections.  When you are purchasing any handicapping service, without an archive of past performances, how can you truly be confident that what you are purchasing has any merit?

Video 4: Using Machine Learning for Predicting NFL Games – By: Berkeley School of Information

I honestly disliked lectures in college.  I do understand many go to college to pursue their dream work, and for them college is likely worth it.  For me, not so much.  That said, I do wish a lecture like this was in the curriculum where I went to school.

This lecture by Amit Bhattacharyya teaches a method involving machine learning algorithms to rank NFL winners on a weekly basis.  The video is a bit long, however, it may be worth checking out.

Video 5: KELLY CRITERION | Ed Thorp | Optimal Position Sizing For Stock Trading – By: Financial Wisdom

We touched on one video about Flat betting.  Another bankroll management strategy used by many is the Kelly Criterion.  Of course, there are other well know bankroll management strategies to implement.  Some more common strategies are the Paroli betting system and the Martingale betting system.  This video, however, discusses the Kelly criterion and is intended to manage your bankroll while investing in the stock market.  However, the same practices can be implemented in sports handicapping.

Video 6: Bet Labs Full Tour – Historical Odds Database Sports Betting Software – By: Sports Insights

I know I previously mentioned that I was going to try to list videos here that were not overly affiliated with promoting a product.  However, I do believe historical back testing is extremely important.  Personally, I have spent months and sometimes even years, back testing possible betting scenarios.  I personally have not used bet labs prior to me writing this article.  I previously wrote an article entitled Where to Find Historical Data to Craft and Fine-tune a Betting System.   This is how I have previously found the data needed to research and painstakingly back test handicapping approaches.

Chances are, however, that I will at least see how back testing using this software is like for a few months.  Regardless, below is a video of what Bet Labs software has to offer.  Video brought to you by YouTube.

Video 7: Coded an A.I Betting Bot and Won – By: Kalle Hallden

I really enjoyed this video.  I watched it with the idea of devising a winning system and back testing that system with code.  I will admit, the gentleman in the video is far more advanced in coding than myself.  However, it is good to dream, right?  Plus, with hard work, I do believe anyone can accomplish this.

In the video Mr. Hallden uses his coding skills in order to devise an approach to successfully handicapping tennis matches.

Conclusion

Holy smokes! This article took much time to write and even more time to research.  No doubt, you can get yourself getting lost on YouTube.  There are so many videos out there based on sports handicapping, yet so many are just not that good or maybe not what I was looking for.  I know there are many more sports handicapping videos out there that are exceptional but, unfortunately, I just haven’t come across them yet.

Regardless, above are the seven videos that I really enjoyed, whether for their humor or for their approach in discussing topics I personally believe are crucial in my sports handicapping model.  I hope you enjoyed the videos.  Furthermore, I hope you learned a couple new handicapping approaches, or maybe increased your knowledge with some approaches you may already have in your toolbelt.  Be well.
